Brisbane flips the order you'd expect. Cover bands are the biggest group in the list below, then duos, singers and solo players, and DJs sit last among the main trades, with almost every act simply calling Brisbane home and a small cluster in Fortitude Valley. Which raises the real question for a Brisbane booker: do you want a band at all, or a guitarist and a singer under a marquee in the backyard?
The climate does a lot of that. Brisbane events run outdoors most of the year, and an acoustic duo or a solo singer sets up on a deck without a power fight or a noise complaint. Bands still own the wedding reception and the work Christmas party, and the jazz bands here are a strength worth knowing about.
Top picks are the nearby performers with the most visible reviews, then rating, then the closest; further afield the closest come first, and premium listings break remaining ties. Distances are straight-line from Brisbane. Ask each act whether they travel to your venue and what that costs.
For a reception under a marquee in a suburban backyard, a duo with a good PA and a second, louder set will usually do the job, and the neighbours will thank you. A full cover band earns its place when there's a proper dance floor and a hundred-plus guests, or when the venue is a hall or a function room built for it. Brisbane's list is deep in cover bands, so if you go that way you'll have choice.
The hours, the head count in the band and the time of year are what set it. A Brisbane band in the storm season also needs a covered stage and safe power, and an act that has to bring its own roof and generator to a riverside lawn will price that in. Friday and Saturday nights from October to December sit at the top of the range. What each band is quoting from today is beside its name on this page.
Plenty do, and the M1 south is short enough that the travel line for the Gold Coast is small and sometimes missing. The Sunshine Coast is a longer run, especially to the hinterland, and a Brisbane band finishing at midnight in Maleny will usually put the drive in the quote. Both coasts have their own pages here, so compare a local before you pay a Brisbane act to travel.
Brisbane has two peaks rather than one. Spring, September to November, is wedding season because the weather is dry and warm without being brutal, and then the corporate Christmas parties start in late November and run to the week before Christmas. Autumn is the second wedding window. Winter weekends are the quietest and the easiest to book.
Some can, some can't, and the profile won't always say. A trio that plays standards through dinner may not have the singer or the songbook to move a floor at ten o'clock, while a bigger swing band might do both. Ask what their second and third sets look like, and if you want soul and pop after dinner, say so before they quote.
Brisbane has a strong run of jazz bands beside its cover bands. Decide whether you want jazz as background for dinner or a proper dance set afterwards, because those are different bands, and say which in your enquiry.
From about November to March, plan for the late afternoon downpour. Any outdoor set needs a roof over the gear and a power point that won't end up in a puddle, so ask the act what they need before you book the marquee.
The Gold Coast sits well outside Brisbane's 25 km circle and has its own page, and so does Ipswich. If your venue is down the coast, start there; if you want a Brisbane act on the coast, expect to pay for the drive.
