The Gold Coast is a fifty kilometre strip, not a city with a middle, and that is the first thing worth telling a DJ. A Coolangatta act playing Hope Island is doing an hour each way on the M1, and on a Friday afternoon that can be a good deal worse.
The venue type matters just as much. Surf clubs run most of the coast's functions and they are generally in the hundred to two hundred range with a balcony over the sand, while the Broadbeach resorts and the convention centre are a different scale of room with AV already installed.
Top picks are the acts in this category in Gold Coast, without a review, rating or premium ranking: all these sort keys are tied.
Where on the coast, for how long, and what's already in the room. A surf club with a house system and a DJ who lives ten minutes away is the cheap version; a hinterland wedding up Tamborine Mountain with a full rig and a foggy drive home is the dear one. Saturdays from September to December go for more, and the week of Schoolies is its own problem. The from-prices on this page are what Gold Coast DJs are quoting at the moment, and the right one for you depends on those three things.
Less than a wedding, mostly because there's no ceremony, no formalities and usually a shorter night. A Gold Coast 21st or 40th in a surf club function room is typically a four-hour block with the DJ arriving an hour early to set up, and the surf club's own speakers can cut what they bring. Ask for the party rate rather than the wedding package, and say the age group so the DJ turns up with the right music.
Not always. Plenty of Gold Coast parties run a playlist through dinner and bring the DJ in for the last three or four hours when people actually dance, which is cheaper and loses nothing. The exception is a room with no system of its own, where the DJ's rig is the only sound and they need to be there from the start.
Tamborine, Currumbin Valley and the Numinbah area all get plenty of weddings and the local DJs know the roads. What you're paying for is time: the climb is slow with a van full of gear, phone reception drops out, and the fog on the mountain after midnight makes the trip home a crawl. Say the venue in your first message so the travel is in the quote rather than a surprise afterwards.
Coolangatta and Tweed Heads sit either side of the state line, and from October to April New South Wales is an hour ahead. If your venue is over the border, confirm which time you both mean when you agree a start.
A public beach means battery gear or a generator, and the council permit is separate from anything the DJ does. Ask what they can run unplugged before you commit to sand.
Surfers Paradise is effectively closed to normal events that week, accommodation is gone and club DJs are committed. Check your date against it before you fall in love with a venue.
