About

Mel Wheeler is a hula hoop act for hire in Sydney, NSW.

Over a decade of professional hooping and fire performance, and hula hoop videos that have racked up millions of views, with features from Daily Mail, Right This Minute, People Are Awesome and America's Got Talent. Mel Wheeler works out of Sydney across corporate functions, private parties, festivals and family events. The stage act runs three to five minutes of freestyle to a track you choose, using shiny day hoops or LED hoops, with a Human Slinky finale available. The premium version is choreographed with LED hoops synced to the music. Roving is an option too, and so is fire. She arrives at least half an hour early to check the space and run a risk assessment before anything spins.

Watch

The show

Fast hands, and hoop tricks that are genuinely hard to follow. Mel's hooping has pulled millions of views online and been picked up by Daily Mail, Right This Minute, People Are Awesome and America's Got Talent, so a fair few of your guests may recognise her before she starts. More than ten years of professional hooping and fire work sits behind the act, and it shows in the safety side as much as the spectacle. She's careful about the space she's working in and how close people are to it. What you get is a short, sharp burst of something most people have never watched up close.

On the day

Give her a call time and a performance time. She arrives at least half an hour ahead to check in, look over the performance area and flag anything that needs sorting. Hoop stage acts want a minimum of three metres square and flat, though four by four or bigger is better, with four metres of clearance overhead. Fire needs four by four of fire-safe ground plus another four metre dead zone between her and the audience, and fifteen minutes beforehand near a secure, well ventilated spot to fuel and extinguish props. High wind, rain or a fire ban means LED hoops go on instead. Grass, concrete or a built stage all work, and a roped off area counts. You'll need a PA for playback, Bluetooth is fine for most acts, and a 3.5mm stereo cable for the synced LED show. A secure room for costume changes, please.

Performance options

The stage act is three to five minutes of freestyle to a track you pick, using shiny day hoops or LED, with a Human Slinky finale available as an add-on. The premium version is choreographed across four to eight minutes with LED lighting synced to the music, solo or with a group. Roving sends performers through the crowd with day or LED hoops, costumes to match your theme, and spare hoops so guests can have a go. The feature fire show runs ten to fifteen minutes with three hoops plus optional props: palm candles, fire crown, fans, dragon staff, swords, torches, and big flame effects if you want them. There's ambient fire roaming for outdoor spaces, and a glow space activation where up to thirty LED hoops go out for guests to play with.
