Kuranda's own list is short: a clown and a singer-songwriter give the village as their address, and after them the closest act is at Yorkeys Knob on the coast below. Everything else on the first screen is Cairns, twenty-odd minutes down the range road, and the trades are singers, duos and singer-songwriters with a DJ and a crooner among them. Don't read that as a Kuranda scene; it's the Cairns scene driving up the hill.
The hill is the point. Kuranda sits in rainforest at the edge of the Tablelands, and the range road is steep, winding and slow in the wet, so a Cairns act finishing at eleven has a real drive ahead of them. Most do it without fuss, but the ones who'll play the Tablelands proper, out to Mareeba and beyond, will want that on the enquiry before they quote.
Top picks are the nearby performers with the most visible reviews, then rating, then the closest; further afield the closest come first, and premium listings break remaining ties. Distances are straight-line from Kuranda. Ask each act whether they travel to your venue and what that costs.
Most DJs on this page are Cairns-based, so a Kuranda job is a Cairns fee with the range road added, and a late finish sometimes brings a request for a room in the village. A wedding with a ceremony playlist and speeches costs more than a party set of the same length. The from-prices beside the DJs on this page are the current starting points.
One of the two acts based in the village is a clown, which is a better start than most places this size get. For face painting or a second act, the Cairns end of the list is the place to look, and they'll drive up for a Saturday party. Give the age range and how many children are coming so the act plans the right show.
Usually, and it's fair. Kuranda itself is a short hop up the range, but Mareeba, Atherton and Yungaburra are an hour or more from Cairns each way, on a road that's slow after dark and worse in the wet. Say the town and the finish time and let the act price it honestly rather than discover the drive on the night.
Trees, humidity and open sides soak up a PA in a way a function room doesn't. Ask the act whether they've played an open-sided venue in the rainforest before, and whether their rig is sized for it.
Some Cairns acts price the northern beaches and the range as one job and some don't. Naming the village up front gets you the real quote.
Mareeba is half an hour west along the highway and Port Douglas is back down the range and up the coast, further than Cairns. The list carries acts from both, and the distance on the card is the honest guide.
