About
Ben Penna Music is a singer-songwriter for hire in Townsville, QLD.
Coastal roots is the label Ben Penna gives it, and the description holds up. He's a North Queensland singer and songwriter with decades of pubs, clubs and festivals behind him, playing his own songs alongside his own readings of other people's. Happy Mag once described his vocals as having an aged quality that gives weight to his ruminations on life, which is a fair summary of the effect. The covers stretch from Van Morrison and Creedence through Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Paul Kelly, Bernard Fanning and Keith Urban. Corporate rooms and front bars both work. He needs power and not much else. He carries public liability cover.
The show
One acoustic performer, and a set that bends to the room he's in. A corporate function gets a version of Ben Penna that sits behind conversation without vanishing, and a front bar on a Saturday gets a louder one, more sing along than background. That range is the point of booking a solo act rather than a full band. Same guitar, same voice, different weight depending on where he's playing and who is in front of him. Clubs and function rooms suit him as readily as the pub does.
