About
The Downtown Collective is a musical duo for hire in Grange, QLD.
Simon and Kathleen work as a Brisbane duo built around female vocals and guitar, with professional backing tracks filling out the sound. The pair can grow: extra vocals, bass, drums, keys, brass or a DJ, right up to an eight piece if the room calls for it. Their material moves between smooth jazz, easy grooves and the dance songs people actually wait for, drawn from the 50s through to now. They read the room rather than run a fixed set, so no two nights land the same way. Weddings, corporate nights, galas and showcases are the usual work. They're insured, and they just need power and a bit of space.
Watch
The show
Kathleen and Simon have both spent a long time on stage, and the pairing is aimed at the higher end of the calendar: luxury weddings, corporate functions, galas and international showcases. What they're good at is setting a mood and holding it. The repertoire stretches from smooth jazz and easy grooves through to the dance numbers people are actually waiting for, old and current alike. Each booking gets shaped around the feel of that particular event rather than run to a house format.
Performance options
The core of it is female vocals and male guitar over professional backing tracks. From there the group scales up: more vocalists, bass, drums or percussion, keys, brass, or a DJ. Stack enough of those together and you're looking at a full eight piece. Which combination suits depends on how big the room is and what sort of night it needs to be.
