About

Random Sass is a musical duo for hire in Picnic Bay, QLD.

Sara Shaw and Clare play as Random Sass out of Picnic Bay, and the fun of watching them is not knowing where the next song is going. Jazz, blues, soul, and then something contemporary out of nowhere. Sara has spent more than 25 years in music, singing a cappella, gospel and rock before settling into jazz, blues and soul, and has performed around Australia and in the USA at festivals including WOMAD, Melbourne Jazz Festival, Melbourne International Festival, Sydney A Cappella Festival, Wangaratta Jazz Festival, Bay Dayz and Palmer Street Jazz Festival. One reviewer described them as excellent musicians whose brilliance bounces off one another. Their set moves through thirties to fifties jazz and blues into RnB and soul. They bring their own PA for one off gigs.

The show

Two players with long histories, so the material comes from a deep well. Sara Shaw has spent more than 25 years singing, from a cappella and gospel through rock, before settling into jazz, blues and soul, with festival work around Australia and in the USA. She teaches singing and works as a session musician. Clare Whitcombe came from New Zealand and has performed in Dubai, Europe and South Korea, toured Australia with theatre, rock, reggae, blues, folk, soul and jazz groups, composed for film and television, and played keys on a long list of albums. Booked as a duo most often, they can expand to a trio or take a full backing band.

On the day

For a one-off gig the pair bring their own PA and you don't need to supply anything beyond the space. Festivals work differently: there they'll want two vocal microphones with stands and a keyboard amp from the production desk.

Song list

This varies from 30s to 50s jazz and blues, to RnB, soul and randomly selected contemporary songs.
