About
Detour West is a musical duo for hire in Yeppoon, QLD.
Folk and country at the base, then blues, reggae and pop leaning in, with the edges between them left deliberately blurry. Karen Hunt is on guitar, Steve Packer on harmonica, and both of them sing. Before the move to Queensland in 2024 they had racked up more than 1,200 shows across Western Australia, billed then as Short & Curly, which shows in how little they need from a venue. Covers pull from Paul Kelly, Crowded House, Amy Winehouse, Van Morrison, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell, Waits, Blondie and The Cure, sitting next to their own songs. Entirely live, no tracks. They bring an EV50 tower system and lighting, so all they need is power, and shade if you've put them outside.
Watch
On the day
An EV50 tower rig and the lighting both travel with Karen and Steve, which is more than enough for the rooms and lawns a folk and country duo usually gets asked into. Two things are worth sorting on your end. One is a power supply near where they will stand. The other only applies outdoors: put some shade over the playing spot, because gear and players both suffer in open Queensland sun. Nothing else needs booking in.
