About
PinkPoliceVan is a guitarist for hire in Sydney, NSW.
The name tells you most of it: Pink Floyd, The Police and Van Halen, three enormous rock catalogues played by one guitarist with vocals and authentic backing. Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Comfortably Numb, Wish You Were Here, Roxanne, You Really Got Me. Around them sits a run of instrumental surf rock that's worth the ticket on its own, Wipeout and Pipeline and Link Wray's Rumble, plus Dire Straits, Boys of Summer and We Will Rock You. Dave Ben Lee holds a Fellowship Diploma in Electric Guitar Performance from the London College of Music and founded Sydney alt rockers Accidental President. Acoustic, semi acoustic with backing, or full electric. Setup is quick, and small venues can be handled on battery powered amplification.
Watch
The show
One guitarist, three of the biggest rock catalogues ever written, and vocals over the top of proper backing rather than a thin karaoke track. Pink Floyd, The Police and Van Halen carry the bulk of it. Shine On You Crazy Diamond leans into Roxanne, which leans into You Really Got Me. Then the instrumental surf rock arrives, Wipeout and the rest, and it lifts the whole thing rather than filling a gap. The Boys Of Summer turns up too. Dave Ben Lee did his training at the London College of Music, where he holds a Fellowship Diploma in Electric Guitar Performance, and he started Sydney alt rockers Accidental President.
On the day
Not much: enough floor for one player and an amp, and a short window to plug in. Setup is fast. Tight rooms are no obstacle either, because there is a battery powered rig for venues where mains power or volume is a problem. Worth telling him the size of the room when you enquire, along with whether the venue has a house PA, its own lighting and someone running sound. That decides which of his setups comes through the door.
