Toowoomba's list is shorter than the size of the city suggests. Everyone on it lives in town, give or take Darling Heights and East Toowoomba, and the Brisbane acts you might expect to see are absent because the range and the Warrego add well over an hour each way to a gig. Short supply is a warning, not a complaint: if your date is fixed, ask early.
What is here is solid and mostly musical. Cover bands, duos, singers and soloists in roughly equal measure, plus a run of corporate bands that tells you how much of the local work is conferences and awards nights rather than weddings. A magician and a comedian round it out. September is the crunch month, with the Carnival of Flowers pulling in visitors and functions alike, so treat spring as peak season.
Top picks are the nearby performers with the most visible reviews, then rating, then the closest; further afield the closest come first, and premium listings break remaining ties. Distances are straight-line from Toowoomba. Ask each act whether they travel to your venue and what that costs.
Enquire with the date, the venue, the crowd size and the kind of room, and be honest about the audience: a Darling Downs agricultural dinner and a hospital staff awards night want different material. There's a comedian on this page who's local, and if the date's gone, Brisbane comedians will drive up the range with travel on the quote. Ask for a video of a corporate set, not a club set.
It's the hardest fortnight of the year. September brings visitors, functions and outdoor events all at once, and the cover bands and duos here are booked across it well ahead. If your event is in September and the date can't move, enquire as soon as you can; if it can move, early October is still spring and a lot easier.
Local bands quote on players and hours, and the number of hours is often longer here because so much of the work is conference dinners and awards nights with a running order. A Brisbane band is a different quote entirely, with the range and the Warrego Highway on it and often a room for the night. The from-prices beside each Toowoomba band on this page are the local starting points.
Yes; the Downs are their patch. Warwick, Dalby and Pittsworth are an hour or so each way, which is normal work and usually a modest travel line on the quote, and further out towards Roma or Goondiwindi you'll be asked about accommodation. A Toowoomba act is still far closer to those towns than anyone from Brisbane.
Toowoomba sits high on the range and winter nights get properly cold. If your reception is outdoors or under a marquee between June and August, check the act is happy playing in it, and that their gear is too.
If the local list doesn't have what you need, Ipswich is the nearer pool and its acts are used to driving up the range. Brisbane is next, at a price. Ask each act plainly whether travel is included in the quote.
Don't skip the corporate bands because your event is a fortieth. Corporate work trains an act to start on time, read a mixed room and keep the volume where people can still talk, which is what most parties need anyway.
