Read the Penrith list as western Sydney's, because that's what it is. A search this close to the city pulls in acts from Blacktown, Rouse Hill, Erskine Park, Windsor and Richmond as well as Penrith itself, and the mix reflects a big, mixed population: cover bands and singers first, then DJs, duos, an eighties band or two, and a few things you wouldn't expect out west, like drag, a cellist and a hula hoop act. Don't assume any of them charge travel to reach you. Most are closer than you think.
And it works the other way too. Penrith is on the M4, right where Sydney ends and the mountains start, so an act based anywhere in the city will take the job, which means this page is only the local end of what you can book. If you don't see what you want, the Sydney and Campbelltown pages cover the same weekend, and a Blue Mountains wedding is a Penrith act's home turf anyway.
Top picks are the nearby performers with the most visible reviews, then rating, then the closest; further afield the closest come first, and premium listings break remaining ties. Distances are straight-line from Penrith. Ask each act whether they travel to your venue and what that costs.
Usually not for the lower mountains. Glenbrook, Springwood and Leura are the Penrith bands' own weekend run, and plenty of them will quote Katoomba without a travel line at all. Past Blackheath, or for a winter night when the highway can fog over, ask straight out, and give the finish time so they can price the drive down.
Less than you'd pay for the same DJ in the inner city, more often than not, because most of the DJs on this list live out this way and there's no travel in it. The hours and the gear make the difference: a four-hour backyard set with one speaker is a different job to a club function room with lights and a smoke machine. Check the from-prices on the DJ listings above, which are what western Sydney DJs are quoting this week.
Only if this page hasn't got the format you want. A Sydney search adds the inner-city acts, but for a Penrith venue they'll add travel and a tighter finish, and the western Sydney acts already here will take the job as locals. So start here, then open the Sydney page for the one thing that's missing, a string quartet or a show band, say.
The drag host on the list is the obvious answer and a lot cheaper than a band. A drag show fills a function room at a club or a hired hall for an hour and leaves the rest of the night to a playlist. Ask what the show needs in the way of a changing room and a decent speaker, because a backyard with a Bluetooth box won't cut it.
Twenty-five kilometres takes in Blacktown and the Hawkesbury, so an act on this page may be closer to Parramatta than to Penrith. It rarely matters for price, but for a Sunday afternoon set in a backyard near the Nepean it's worth knowing who's ten minutes away.
Penrith crowds have seen a lot of cover bands, because the clubs out here have been booking them for decades. Ask for a live video rather than a studio one, and listen for whether the singer can actually hold the big choruses.
The odd ones on the list are what make a party different: a drag host for a hens night, a cellist for the ceremony, a hula hoop act for a kids' day. They usually cost less than a band, travel with less gear, and they're local, which is not something you'd guess about Penrith.
