Darwin's list is short and it's mostly solo. Singers, soloists, MCs and a few comedians make up most of it, with a handful of DJs and cover bands behind them, and every act is based in Darwin itself. Is that enough choice? For a wedding or a corporate dinner, yes, provided you're not leaving it to the last fortnight.
The dry season is when Darwin does its entertaining. From about May to October the humidity drops, the outdoor venues open up, and the weddings, festivals and end-of-financial-year functions all land in the same window. The same singers and MCs get asked for the same Saturdays, so the earlier you check your date, the more of the list below is still free.
Top picks are the nearby performers with the most visible reviews, then rating, then the closest; further afield the closest come first, and premium listings break remaining ties. Distances are straight-line from Darwin. Ask each act whether they travel to your venue and what that costs.
It can be the smart move. Between November and April the acts on this list have far more free dates, hotels have function space to spare, and a soloist or a comedian who's booked solid through the dry can give you a Saturday on a few weeks' notice. Just keep the whole thing under a roof with air-conditioning and the humidity stops being the guest of honour.
Send an enquiry to the comedian with the event type, the date, the number of guests and how long a set you want, and say who the audience is. That last part matters more in Darwin than most places, because a room can be defence families, station crews and public servants in the same night, and a comedian who knows that will tune the material. A quote comes back in writing and nothing is booked until you accept it.
There are a few cover bands and DJs on the list, but they go fast in the dry. Flying a band up from Brisbane or Adelaide means airfares for every member, freight for the gear and accommodation in the season when Darwin hotels are dearest, and you'd want to be sure a local singer with a full rig couldn't do it first. A DJ from this page plus a soloist for the ceremony is how a lot of Top End weddings solve it.
Only if you forget it. Darwin runs on Central Standard Time all year, with no daylight saving, so in summer it's an hour and a half behind Sydney and Melbourne. Put "Darwin time" next to every start time in your emails, especially if head office is on the east coast and the run sheet was written there.
A Darwin singer with a backing track and a decent PA can run a whole reception, ceremony to last dance. Ask what a soloist can cover before you assume you need a band that would have to fly in from interstate.
Darwin has a decent run of MCs on this page, and an MC who knows the local venues keeps a Top End reception on time when the heat and the bar are working against you. If your singer doesn't offer it, add one.
If your date falls between November and April, say so in the enquiry. An outdoor set in the build-up is a different job to one in July, and the good acts will ask about cover, power and a wet weather plan before they quote.
