Bells Beach isn't a town. It's a famous stretch of surf a few minutes past Torquay with a car park, a cliff and not many houses, and the entertainers on this page reflect that: one band gives Bells Beach as its address, a cover act and a singer are in Torquay, and after Armstrong Creek the list becomes Geelong's. I'd treat this as the Torquay list with the distances shifted a few kilometres south.
What the page is good for is a wedding or a party held out this way, on a cliff-top property between Jan Juc and Anglesea, where the wind and the lack of a hall change the job. Singers and cover bands are the deep trades, with duos and a party band or two, and there's an accordion player at Highton if you want something nobody else at the wedding has heard. Geelong's acts are a comfortable half hour away and travel rarely comes up on a quote for Torquay or Bells.
Top picks are the nearby performers with the most visible reviews, then rating, then the closest; further afield the closest come first, and premium listings break remaining ties. Distances are straight-line from Bells Beach. Ask each act whether they travel to your venue and what that costs.
Band prices on the Surf Coast follow the head count and the hours first and the calendar second, with spring and summer Saturdays at the top. Bells and Jan Juc venues are mostly private properties and marquees, so a band supplying its own power and PA quotes higher than one plugging in at a Torquay pub. The from-prices next to the bands on this page are today's starting points.
The beach is a surfing reserve and the car park is the public's, so a private event there isn't a matter of booking a band and turning up. Most people use a property back from the cliffs or a room in Torquay instead. Ask the act to quote for a private site with no mains power if that's the plan.
All the time; the Surf Coast is Geelong's weekend. The drive is about half an hour down the Surf Coast Highway, and an act from Highton or Armstrong Creek is even closer. Where it changes is Aireys Inlet and Lorne, further along the Great Ocean Road, which is a slower run home at midnight.
The surf contest brings crowds to Bells every Easter and fills Torquay's rooms with them. A party that weekend competes for parking, accommodation and the attention of every local act, so book well ahead or pick another weekend.
A ceremony above the beach sounds right until the south-westerly comes through. Ask the act about a wind-proof set-up, keep any strings under cover and put the speakers where the breeze isn't.
Torquay's page carries almost the same acts, five kilometres closer to the shops. If your venue is in town, read that one; if it's out on the coast road, this order suits you better.
