One DJ lives in Apollo Bay. After that the next name on the page is a singer over the ranges at Deans Marsh, and everyone else is at Bells Beach, Torquay or Geelong, which the map calls close and the Great Ocean Road does not. A straight line across the Otways means nothing to a band with a trailer. Count the road.
What the town has instead is a proper season. Summer, Easter and the long weekends fill Apollo Bay with visitors and weddings, and the Geelong cover bands, party bands and duos who work the coast will drive down for a Saturday if you ask early enough. Leave it late and you're competing with Lorne and Anglesea for the same acts on the same dates.
Top picks are the nearby performers with the most visible reviews, then rating, then the closest; further afield the closest come first, and premium listings break remaining ties. Distances are straight-line from Apollo Bay. Ask each act whether they travel to your venue and what that costs.
Further than the numbers on the cards suggest. The distance on a card is measured across the Otways, but the acts drive the Great Ocean Road through Lorne or the inland road through Forrest, and either one turns an hour into more. A Geelong band leaving Apollo Bay at midnight is on that road until well past one. Put the finish time in the enquiry so they can price it properly.
One DJ gives the town as home and he's the only act on the page with no drive at all. For a house party, a club function or a birthday, start there. For a wedding with a ceremony, dinner and dancing, you'll usually be adding someone from the Surf Coast or Geelong.
As soon as the date is firm, especially for anything between November and March. The same Geelong and Torquay acts get asked for Lorne, Anglesea and Skenes Creek on those weekends, and the good ones go months ahead. Winter is a different story and you'll have your pick.
It can be done, but plan it rather than assume it. The southerly comes off the water in the afternoon, gear needs covering, and most foreshore and property sites here have thin power. Ask the act what they need in the way of a roof and an outlet, and have an indoor fallback that doesn't need a second set-up.
From Geelong it's an hour and a half of winding road each way, longer at night and slower in the wet. Expect travel on the quote, and ask whether a late finish means the act would rather have a room than a fee for the drive.
For a birthday, a club night or a party in a holiday house, the DJ in town has no road to price and can start and finish when you want. That's a real advantage over anything coming over the hills.
The harbour and the foreshore take the southerly straight off the water, and a lot of properties here have one outdoor power point at best. Tell the act what power there is and whether the set is in the open.
