About

Red Faces is a caricaturist for hire in Sydney, NSW.

Ten faces an hour, maybe fifteen, pen on paper, and every guest keeps theirs. Red Faces send caricature artists out across the country, roving a room, drawing fast and running a line of commentary while they work. The formula hasn't changed in years: turn up on time, dress properly, be good company, draw well. They've worked on post-it notes, mouse mats and digitally on iPads when a client wanted something different. Ten guests or a thousand, the format adapts. For a cocktail function they'll handle the lot themselves. For a sit-down event they need a table, three chairs and decent light, and they arrive a quarter of an hour before things start.

The show

Pen, paper, and a queue that forms by itself. The artists work the room rather than sitting behind a desk waiting, and while the pen moves they keep up a running gag with whoever is sitting for them and whoever is watching over their shoulder. Ten to fifteen finished faces an hour is the working pace. Every one of those drawings walks out the door in a guest's hand, which is the part people talk about afterwards. Turn up on time, dress properly, be good company, draw well. That's been the whole approach for years and it still holds. Ten guests or a thousand, the job scales.

On the day

Depends on how your event runs. For a cocktail function or anything roving, you don't need to organise a thing - they move through the crowd and work standing up. Sit-down events are different. A table, three chairs and light that's actually good enough to draw by, please. Bad lighting is the one thing that slows a caricature artist down. Give them a quarter of an hour before your start time to get settled and the first guest can sit straight away.

Performance options

The standard corporate booking is a three hour caricature session, artists roving and drawing while the function goes on around them. Scale it up and you can have two artists working the room alongside a feature act, which is the version for a bigger crowd or a night that needs a centrepiece. They also paint murals at events, live, with the artwork building through the evening in front of the guests. Brad Blaze performs a live art show, quoted on request. Every format ends the same way, with guests holding something they get to take home.
