About
Tribute To Kamahl is a tribute show for hire in Sydney, NSW.
Omar Shah sings Kamahl, and the voice is the reason it works: a rich bass baritone with real depth to it, closer to Paul Robeson in weight and Nat King Cole in delivery. The set draws on Kamahl's earlier catalogue, The Elephant Song, The Sound of Goodbye, One Hundred Children and Ol' Man River among them, alongside standards like My Way, The Impossible Dream, Nature Boy and Some Enchanted Evening. It crosses generations comfortably, which is much of the appeal for a mixed room. Sydney based. Backing tracks are available, or the show can go out with a six to eight piece band, which needs a longer load-in and sound check.
The show
The set is drawn from Kamahl's early catalogue. The Elephant Song, The Sound Of Goodbye, One Hundred Children and Ol' Man River are all in there, with plenty more from the same period alongside them.
On the day
Which version of the show you go with changes the answer entirely. Backing tracks keep things simple. Go with the six to eight piece band and allow four to five hours on the day for setting up and running the sound check, and check whether your venue can put a sound system in place, as that may need to come from their end. Musicians in the larger line-up are billed on their own.
