About
Sculptor is a jazz band for hire in Sydney, NSW.
Sculptor is a group of Sydney musicians who've each done a lot of playing before turning up here. The core is a trio of keys, bass and drums, and it grows from there. Add singers, horns and brass and it starts moving toward big band territory. The repertoire comes out of a love of jazz in most of its forms, from Horace Silver and Bobby Timmons through to Yussef Dayes and Kamasi Washington. That range means the band can sit quietly under a corporate dinner or push a party along, depending on what the night wants. They play semi acoustic or amplified, with power needed for the latter. Trio, quartet or quintet, sorted in conversation beforehand.
The show
A trio of keys, bass and drums is where Sculptor usually sits, and it grows from there. Add singers, horns and brass and the sound moves toward big band territory without losing what makes the smaller version work. The players are Sydney veterans with a lot of venues and shows behind them. The repertoire runs across jazz in most of its forms, from Horace Silver and Bobby Timmons through to Yussef Dayes and Kamasi Washington, so the band can sit elegantly under a corporate dinner or loosen into something people actually dance to.
On the day
They can play semi acoustic or amplified. Semi acoustic suits a smaller room and needs very little from you. Go amplified and power has to be available at the performance spot. If your venue sits somewhere between the two, or the space is awkward, it's worth raising early because alternate arrangements can usually be worked out.
Performance options
The line-up gets settled in conversation. Trio, quartet or quintet, chosen around your venue, how many people are in it and what you want the atmosphere to do. A quiet dinner and a party want different numbers on the floor. Bigger versions bring in singers, horns and brass for something closer to a big band. Tell them the room and the mood and they'll suggest the shape that suits.
