Most of what plays in Hervey Bay is one person and a guitar, or one person and a keyboard. The list below leans hard toward solo singers and singer-songwriters, with a few cover bands, a couple of DJs and karaoke for the nights nobody wants to be the act. Full bands are the thin end here, so if you want four or five people on stage, enquire with those first and expect the conversation to be about dates.
The town fills up from whale season through to Christmas, and the acts fill up with it. Resort function rooms, foreshore weddings and the Sunday sessions at the caravan parks all draw on the same short run of names. If you strike out locally, Bundaberg is about an hour up the road and its acts will usually make the trip for a wedding.
Top picks are the nearby performers with the most visible reviews, then rating, then the closest; further afield the closest come first, and premium listings break remaining ties. Distances are straight-line from Hervey Bay. Ask each act whether they travel to your venue and what that costs.
Cheaper than a band and often about the same as a solo singer, since it's one person, a rig and a song library. What pushes it up is hours, a bigger speaker set for an outdoor holiday-house party, and whether they're also expected to MC the night. Look at the from-price on the karaoke listing above for what's being quoted around the Fraser Coast right now.
You can, but there are only a few, so treat it as the first enquiry you send rather than the last. If they're gone on your date, the Bundaberg bands are an hour away and used to the run down to Hervey Bay, and their travel line tends to be modest for that distance. Failing that, a singer who also fronts a band can sometimes bring a second player, which gets you most of the way for a room of sixty.
August through to Christmas, roughly. Whale season brings the visitors and the resort function rooms fill, and the same handful of singers get asked for the same Saturdays. A midweek date, or anything between February and June, gets a quicker yes and sometimes a softer price.
Maryborough is half an hour and most will treat it as local, so just put the address in the enquiry. K'gari is another matter: a barge, a four-wheel drive and a long day mean the fee climbs and not every act will take it. Ask that question in the first message, before you fall for a voice.
Nearly every Hervey Bay wedding wants the ceremony near the water, and the foreshore gets an afternoon breeze that eats an unamplified voice. Ask the singer what they bring for outdoors, and whether it needs power.
They're a different thing. A singer with tracks gives you three hours of background and a bit of a dance at the end; a band gives you a show. Decide which one your crowd actually is before you compare quotes.
It's on the list because people book it: a host with the gear, the songs and the nerve to get a room going, which is the easiest way to fill a birthday at a holiday house. Just check they bring their own speakers.
