Bowen Mountain is a village on the escarpment above Grose Vale, one road up from the Hawkesbury flats, and it has its own folk singer, which is more than most villages this size can say. The rest of the ten look close on the map and aren't always close by car. Winmalee's DJ is across the Grose River gorge on the Blue Mountains side, and the road between them runs down through Richmond and over the river at Yarramundi. Richmond and Windsor supply a duo, a DJ and a Karen Carpenter tribute show, Glossodia a singer, Springwood a magician, Faulconbridge a mime and Penrith a drag act. Up here the kilometres on the cards are the straight line, and the drive is something else.
Singers and cover bands are the biggest trades in reach, then bands, duos and wedding singers, most of them based in Penrith, Parramatta and Blacktown at the outer edge of the circle. That's the western Sydney pool, and it's deep. A Bowen Mountain booking is usually a house on a bush block, the community hall, or a property wedding down at Kurrajong or Grose Vale, and the act needs to know which, because the last stretch up the mountain is steep, narrow and dark after the dancing stops.
Top picks are the nearby performers with the most visible reviews, then rating, then the closest; further afield the closest come first, and premium listings break remaining ties. Distances are straight-line from Bowen Mountain. Ask each act whether they travel to your venue and what that costs.
Two DJs in the ten are from the Hawkesbury and one is from Winmalee, and a local DJ's price is mostly hours and gear: how long they play, whether you want lights, and if the party is on a deck with no cover. The mountain adds a little for the climb and the late drive down, and a Penrith or Parramatta DJ will add more. Check the from-prices on the DJ cards above and put the street in the enquiry so the quote knows it's the escarpment.
They will, but the Winmalee DJ and the Springwood magician have to drive down to the river and back up the other side, so an act at Richmond or Windsor is often quicker to reach you than one that looks nearer on the map. Ask how long they think the trip is; if the answer is a quarter of an hour they haven't looked. The ones who've played Kurrajong before know the road.
For a ceremony on a bush block with a view over the Hawkesbury, a folk singer with an acoustic guitar is about the best fit there is, and this one lives in the village. Ask for a song list and whether they'll learn one request, and check if they carry a small battery amp for a garden with thirty guests and a breeze. Bring a DJ or a duo in for the reception rather than asking a soloist to run the whole night.
Plenty of Sydney acts have never heard of Bowen Mountain and a map app will send some of them up the wrong side of the gorge. Say it's the escarpment above Grose Vale, reached through Kurrajong or North Richmond, and the load-in goes better.
The village backs onto the Grose Valley bush and total fire ban days come around every summer. On those days a generator, an outdoor fire act or even a smoke machine on a deck can be off the table, so ask the act what they'd do and have an indoor fallback.
Most of these acts also appear on the Richmond page, and for a property wedding at Kurrajong or Wilberforce that page is the one to read. Come back here when the party is up the mountain and the last kilometre matters.
