Spring is the season that owns this suburb. With the racecourse and the showgrounds on the doorstep, the weeks around the carnival and the show fill up the local rooms, push the traffic around and put every nearby act in demand at once. Book outside that window and you have the pick of the pool. Book inside it and you are competing with everyone else on this side of the Maribyrnong.
Six kilometres is all that separates you from the city where the nearest ten acts are based, and none of them lists this suburb as home. That is a short run by Melbourne standards. All ten carry reviews from previous clients, so there is something real to read before you enquire.
Top picks are the nearby performers with the most visible reviews, then rating, then the closest; further afield the closest come first, and premium listings break remaining ties. Distances are straight-line from Ascot Vale. Ask each act whether they travel to your venue and what that costs.
Harder rather than bad, because the racing carnival and the show put pressure on venues, roads and acts in the same few weeks. If your date is fixed inside that stretch, chase the act months ahead and be flexible on the start time. If it is not fixed, late winter or February gives you a much easier run at it.
An acoustic duo or a soloist with a single speaker, since these gardens are long, narrow and hemmed in by neighbours on both sides. The sound has nowhere to go but sideways over a fence, so volume is your enemy rather than your friend. Tell the act the block is tight and ask what they do with a small outdoor space.
Rarely, and at that distance a travel line is worth questioning politely. The run up CityLink or along Mount Alexander Road is one of the shorter ones any Melbourne performer makes. Moonee Ponds and Essendon are nearer place pages if you want to compare the same acts from another starting point.
Rooms, acts and parking all get harder in the first half of November. A date either side of it costs less and gives you more choice.
The older blocks around Union Road run deep with a side path a metre wide, and that decides how much gear can get to the back. Send a photo of the path.
A ceremony in the garden and a reception indoors means two setups or a portable one. Acts price those differently, so name it upfront.
