Alice Springs is the hardest place on this site to write about honestly. There's a small local set, and it's a good one for a town this size: a duo, a singer, a belly dancer and an acrobatic act, which between them cover a wedding, a work dinner and a festival stage. After that the list doesn't so much thin out as leave the district altogether: everything else is somewhere else in the Territory, and out here that means a full day on the Stuart Highway or a flight.
Read the rest of the page as a travel list: an act from Darwin, or from interstate, is coming to Alice as a fly-in, with airfares, gear freight and at least one night's accommodation on top of the fee, and any quote worth having says so plainly. Conferences and outback weddings do it all the time; a fortieth in a backyard in Gillen usually doesn't. Book the locals early for the cooler months, when the town holds its events and they're working most weekends.
Top picks are the nearby performers with the most visible reviews, then rating, then the closest; further afield the closest come first, and premium listings break remaining ties. Distances are straight-line from Alice Springs. Ask each act whether they travel to your venue and what that costs.
There are, and they're at the top of this page with the shortest distances on their cards. It's a short list for a town this size and it'll grow as more acts list here, but a duo, a singer and a couple of speciality performers is enough to cover most local events. Everyone below them is a long way off.
More than the fee, sometimes. Flights from Darwin or Adelaide, excess baggage for instruments, a hire car and a motel for at least one night all land on the invoice, and a band multiplies every line by its members. Ask for it itemised so you can compare a fly-in against booking the locals.
Some will, for a conference dinner or a wedding with the budget to cover the trip, and the Darwin page is where to find them. It's a flight, not a drive, so nobody does it for a short set. The more notice you give, the cheaper the fares.
In Alice the difference between a local act and the next nearest isn't a travel fee, it's a plane ticket. Put the acts based in town at the top of your shortlist for anything smaller than a conference.
If you do bring someone up from Darwin or down from Adelaide, ask for the fee, the flights, the freight for gear and the accommodation as separate lines. A DJ who can hire decks in town is far cheaper to fly than a band with a drum kit.
Alice does its weddings, races and festivals between May and September, when it's cool enough to be outside, and the local acts fill up for those weekends. Summer is empty and hot, and you'll have your pick if you can bear an evening event in the heat.
