The best big bands in Sydney

17 big bands in Sydney · typically $500 to $890 · free to enquire, no account needed

Get the stage measurement before you get attached to anybody on this list. Sydney's harbourside and CBD function rooms sell themselves on the view rather than on the platform, and plenty of them offer a stage that photographs wide while running barely two metres from front to back. Rows of horn players need depth, and a band squeezed onto a shallow riser sounds worse than a smaller group with room to work.

The second thing to ask the venue about is how the gear gets in. A dozen musicians arriving in a dozen cars with a kit, a double bass and a stack of stands need somewhere to pull up, somewhere to leave the cars all evening, and to be set up long before your guests appear. Around the harbour and through the city that is a genuine logistical problem, and it quietly rules acts in or out.

Questions people ask about big bands in Sydney

Why does a big band cost more than other live music?

There is a payroll behind the figure, not a margin, and it splits between a dozen or more professionals who each gave up a Saturday night for it. Negotiating the total down is therefore a dead end, while negotiating the shape of the band is not. Ask what the same charts sound like with a couple fewer horns and what that version costs, then compare the two properly.

Will a big band fit a Sydney harbour venue?

Some will and plenty will not, and the honest answer comes from the measurements rather than from the photographs. Collect four things from the venue: how far back the stage runs, whether a double bass and a kit fit through the doors, where the power sits, and how much light falls on the stands. Hand that list to a bandleader and let them tell you honestly what will fit. If the answer is a smaller group for that particular room, take it as expertise rather than a soft refusal.

What sort of events suit a big band?

Balls, awards nights, gala dinners, the large corporate functions where the entertainment is supposed to be the point rather than the wallpaper. Across a wide Sydney ballroom the band works visually too, filling a platform that four musicians would be swallowed by. At a small party it is simply the wrong purchase, and any bandleader worth talking to will say that to your face.

The list is short. Should I enquire with all of them?

All of them, on the same day, because an outfit this size plays very few Saturdays in a year and December disappears first. Should nothing here suit the room or what you have to spend, a small horn led group will take you most of the way to the same sound for a fraction of the logistics. Look at the swing and jazz listings as well, where much of this material turns up with half the players.

Booking tips

Ask what configurations they run

A group this size almost always has a smaller shape it can take, keeping the leader and the charts and losing a few horns. Opening with a question about which sizes exist gets you much further than opening with a question about the price.

Check whether a singer is in the number

Some of these bands are instrumental and add a vocalist as a separate fee, while others quote with the voice built in. It changes the shape of your night as much as it changes the quote.

Book the access window, not just the room

Laying out the rows, getting light onto every stand and running a sound check takes far longer than an hour. Say what time you can get into the room when you first write, or half your shortlist will quote on a night that was never possible.
