The best bands in Melbourne

Booking a band in Melbourne starts with a decision nobody warns you about: how many people you actually want on stage. The same group of players will often quote you as a trio, a four piece or a six piece with horns, and the difference is not just volume, it is how much floor space and load-in time your venue has to give up.

Rooms here push that decision around more than you would think. A Fitzroy warehouse with brick walls and a concrete floor makes a small band sound thin and a big one sound like a wall, while a Brunswick function room with carpet and a low ceiling does the opposite. Name the venue in your first message and let the band tell you the lineup rather than the other way round.

Questions people ask about bands in Melbourne

How much to hire a band in Melbourne?

The from-prices beside each band on this page are the live figures, and they move with the lineup more than anything else. A four piece playing a city function room with its own PA is the economical version, while a six piece with horns heading out to the Yarra Valley is carrying more gear, more people and a longer drive home. Ask for the same lineup from everyone you enquire with, otherwise you are comparing different bands doing different jobs.

How many band members do I need for my venue?

Guest count matters less than the room. A hundred people in a carpeted function room are well served by a four piece, while the same hundred in a hard-walled Collingwood warehouse will want more sound and probably a bigger PA to go with it. Tell the band the venue and the rough floor plan, and a group that has played that kind of space will steer you honestly, usually towards the smaller option.

Do Melbourne bands bring their own sound and lighting?

Most do, but it is the single thing most often left vague in a quote. Plenty of older city function rooms and hotels have a house system the band can plug into, which cuts both the setup time and the gear line on your quote, while a warehouse or a marquee means every speaker arrives in the trailer. Get the answer in writing, because a band expecting a house PA that does not exist is a bad discovery at four in the afternoon.

What time does the band have to stop playing?

Look at your venue's planning permit rather than the band's availability. A lot of inner suburb rooms hold a hard cutoff on amplified music as a condition of their consent, and it is common for that to land earlier than the bar closing time. Build the sets backwards from the cutoff, and be aware that a Yarra Valley or Peninsula venue may also be working to a last transport time for guests.

Booking tips

Ask how the sets are built

Three forty five minute sets with recorded music through the breaks is the standard shape for a Melbourne function. What varies is whether the band plays a quieter dinner set first, and that is worth settling before the run sheet is printed.

Load-in is the hidden cost

A lot of the best inner north rooms have no loading bay, a tram line out front and stairs at the back. Ask the venue about an access window early, because a band carrying a drum kit two hundred metres will either price it in or start late.

October to December fills first

The racing carnival rolls straight into the Christmas run, so the good bands lose those Saturdays months ahead. If your date sits in that window, shortlist before you have finalised anything else.
