Bagpiper hire in Australia: the complete guide

20 bagpipers across Australia · typically $250 to $300 · free to enquire, no account needed

A piper is booked in minutes, not hours. Three or four tunes at a wedding, one at a graveside, a single set piece to pipe in a haggis or a guest of honour. The playing time is often under ten minutes in total, which surprises people looking at the fee until they realise they are paying for a specialist, their travel, their dress and the fact that nothing else on earth sounds like it.

The pipers listed here work mostly out of Melbourne and Sydney, with players across Queensland and elsewhere. Where a piper publishes a starting fee, you can find it on their profile below. The two things worth understanding first are how loud the instrument really is and how few minutes you actually need.

Volume, and where to put the piper

Highland pipes are among the loudest acoustic instruments there are, with no volume control at all. That is the point of them: they were built to be heard across a valley. Indoors in a small room with hard walls, a piper standing among the guests is genuinely uncomfortable and people will put their fingers in their ears, which is not the photograph you wanted.

So put the piper outside, at a distance, or moving. On a path leading guests in. At the door of the church. Across the lawn. Walking ahead of a party into the reception. Indoors, they work best processing through a large space rather than standing still in a corner, and in a low-ceilinged function room they are usually a bad fit unless the door is open and they are heading out of it.

There are not enough listings in any one city to show a useful city price table yet. Check the profiles below for advertised starting prices, or enquire for a quote for your date and venue.

Weddings, funerals and ceremonial moments

At a wedding the usual shape is piping guests in as they arrive, piping the bride down an aisle or a path, and piping the couple out afterwards. Sometimes a set as guests move to the reception. That is three short moments spread across an hour or two, which is why you are booking a piper's afternoon rather than a few minutes of playing.

Funerals are the other major booking and the requirement is different. Usually one tune, at a specific moment, played from a position the family has chosen, and the piper's job is to get it exactly right the first time with no second chance. Tell them the tune if the family has one in mind, and tell them where they should stand and who gives the signal. Then there are Burns suppers, Anzac and Remembrance services, corporate openings and Scottish and Irish celebrations, each with its own conventions the piper will know better than you do.

Tunes, and what to ask for

Most pipers carry a standard repertoire of Scottish and Irish tunes and will have sensible defaults for each part of a wedding or a service. If you want something specific, ask early, because not every tune sits on the pipes. The instrument has a fixed nine-note scale and a lot of popular music simply cannot be played on it without changing the melody.

An honest piper will tell you that straight rather than butchering a request. Name the moment and the mood instead: something stately for an entrance, something bright for the exit, something slow at a graveside. They will pick better than a list found online will, and they will pick something that actually works on the instrument.

Dress, weather and tuning

Full Highland dress is part of what you are booking and it is hot. A February afternoon outdoors in the sun is hard work in that outfit, so offer shade and water and keep the playing slots short. Ask what dress they wear as standard and whether there are options, since a funeral, a Burns supper and a beach wedding are not the same occasion.

Pipes also need warming up and tuning, and it is loud. Ask the piper how long they need and give them somewhere out of earshot of your guests to do it, because twenty minutes of tuning drones drifting across arrival drinks ruins the surprise. Rain is the other factor. The instrument does not enjoy a downpour and neither does the dress, so agree a covered position as a fallback when you book.

Timing, cues and one piper or several

Give the piper a cue and a person. A piper cannot hear a whispered instruction while playing and cannot see behind them, so somebody needs to be in their eyeline giving a clear signal to start and stop. Agree who that is and what the signal looks like, and walk it through beforehand if the moment matters.

If you want more than one player, say so at enquiry stage. Two or three pipers together, or pipes with a side drum, is a different and much bigger sound suited to a procession or a large outdoor gathering. It is also more people and more coordination, and the right number depends on the space rather than the occasion.

Questions worth asking before you book

How many playing moments does the quote cover and across how long? Where would you recommend standing at a venue like ours? How long do you need to warm up and tune, and where? What dress do you wear for an occasion like this? And can that tune actually be played on the pipes?

Ask for video or audio recorded outdoors at a real event rather than in a room. Pipes recorded close up on a phone sound quite different from pipes heard across a lawn, and outdoors at a real occasion is the setting you are actually buying.

Booking tips

Give them somewhere to tune

Out of earshot of arriving guests, with about twenty minutes. Tuning drones across the arrival drinks spoils the entrance you paid for.

Outdoors or moving beats standing indoors

The instrument has no volume control. A piper leading people somewhere sounds magnificent, and the same piper in a small carpeted room does not.

Name a person to cue them

Somebody in the piper's eyeline giving a clear start and stop signal. A piper mid-tune cannot hear you calling from behind.
