About
Kai is a singer for hire in Happy Valley, SA.
Kai sings and plays guitar, and studies jazz performance at Adelaide Uni. The set leans hard on the 90s and 2000s: Coldplay, Oasis, Radiohead, The Strokes, Weezer, Blink 182, Outkast, R.E.M., Daft Punk, MGMT, Owl City and plenty more. A loop station builds live drum and chord beds underneath, so a solo player fills more space than you'd expect, and there are improvised guitar solos dropped in where the arrangement wants them. If you'd rather a folk or jazz leaning night, that's doable too. PA, microphones and lighting all come along, though house systems are fine if a venue prefers its own. No help needed with setup or pack down.
The show
Kai plays the nineties and the noughties, the songs most of the room already knows the words to, and then does something more interesting with them than a straight copy. The arrangements are his own. Extra textures get layered underneath, guitar solos land in places the original never had one, and the set stops being predictable about three songs in. So it's familiar material, played by someone who studies jazz performance and clearly can't help himself. Upbeat, and it stays that way.
On the day
Kai brings the lot: PA, microphones and lighting, all of it his own. But he's not precious about it. If your venue would rather he ran through the house system, that's fine and he'll work with whatever's installed. Either way, setup and pack down are his problem, not yours. No hands needed at either end of the night.
Performance options
Kai also works as a duo with his father. That version adds a second guitar to play off, so the improvised sections turn into a back and forth between the two of them, and it brings violin and harmonica into the arrangements along with a second voice for harmonies. The solo set is the loop station act. The duo is the fuller, looser sounding one.
