Charles Calleja is a singer for hire in Melbourne, VIC.
Charles Calleja has sung and played guitar solo for over 20 years, working clubs, bars, RSLs, weddings and private functions around Melbourne. He uses quality backing tracks to fill out the sound, and he aims squarely at a middle aged crowd: 50s, 60s and 70s rock, pop and country, with some modern covers alongside. Think Sinatra, Elvis, Roy Orbison, Dean Martin, Johnny Cash, The Beatles, Creedence, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, the Stones, Tom Jones and Michael Buble. He also plays Shadows guitar instrumentals like Apache and Albatross. He engages with the room rather than performing at it. An hour to set up lighting, PA and mic, plus a sound check. Equipment tested and tagged, insurance current.
The show
Twenty years of clubs, bars, RSLs, weddings and private functions sit behind the way Charles Calleja works a room. He's not performing at you. He talks to the crowd, reads what they're responding to, and shifts accordingly. The material is aimed at a crowd that grew up on the 50s, 60s and 70s: Sinatra, Elvis, Roy Orbison, Dean Martin, Johnny Cash, The Beatles, Creedence, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, the Stones, Tom Jones, Michael Buble, and Shadows instrumentals like Apache and Albatross when the mood suits. Backing tracks fill it out so a solo guitar never sounds thin. Presentation matters to him and it shows.
On the day
Give him an hour before guests arrive. That covers lighting, the PA and microphone, and a proper sound check, which is the bit most people forget to leave room for. His gear is tested and tagged.
