About
Flash Poetry is a rapper for hire in Melbourne, VIC.
Everything is made up on the spot. Flash Poetry, also known as Nico, is a Melbourne freestyle rapper, guitarist, MC and author who performs with a four piece band of jazz improvisers, building whole sets from crowd suggestions, the room, and whatever happens to be alive in that moment. Rhythm and poetry cross into comedy and storytelling. He wrote the poetry collection The Silent World That Won't Stop Talking, and occasionally drops in a song from his album Reality, Now. The work has landed on the TEDxMelbourne stage and at festivals, expos, art galleries and corporate events, and the band has played to school kids, university students and residents of aged care homes. He can perform solo or with the full band, which is self sufficient on gear but prefers the venue PA where there is one. Working with Children Check held.
Watch
The show
Nothing is prepared. Flash Poetry takes suggestions from the crowd in real time and builds whole lyrical sequences out of them, tying in your prompts, the theme of the event and whatever happens to be going on in the room. Rhythm and poetry cross over into comedy and storytelling as it goes. Behind him is a live band of jazz improvisers doing the same thing musically, which is what makes it a performance rather than a party trick. The work has taken him from festivals and expos to art galleries, corporate events and the TEDxMelbourne stage.
On the day
Nico, who performs as Flash Poetry, can work solo or bring his four piece band of jazz improvisers for the full show. The band carry everything they need, mics and instruments included, and they've got their own speakers. That said, they'd rather use the venue's PA where there is one. Audiences vary a lot: they've performed for school kids, university students and residents in aged care homes.
