Atete's Hawaiian and Polynesian Shows is a Polynesian dancer for hire in Maroochydore, QLD.
Ukulele songs, island drums, hula and a fire finale. Atete Punahele trained in Polynesian dance at the Foyer De Jeunu Fille in Papeete, Tahiti, and directs a show that moves from welcome songs of the South Pacific through Hawaiian standards and originals to two or three dancers in full traditional colour. Guests get invited up to learn a hula, couples can face off in a friendly dance contest to live drumming, and the night can close with a fire act under the open sky. A lei greeting on arrival is an option, and so are Elvis-era hula numbers. Atete also sings and writes her own Hawaiian and country material. Based in Maroochydore, built for themed events, cultural galas and parties that want the islands brought to them.
The show
It opens with welcome songs from the South Pacific, ukulele and voice, traditional Hawaiian numbers alongside Atete's own writing. Then two or three Polynesian dancers come out in full colour, and there are Elvis-era hula pieces in there too. Guests get pulled up to learn a hula, and the tribal drums bring out a friendly dance contest for couples. The fire finale closes it, a war dance lit up under the open sky to live island drumming. A lei greeter can meet people on arrival, or the act can start quietly with dinner and cocktail music while everyone mixes.
On the day
The dancers are barefoot, so a level, smooth surface matters more than anything else here. A dance floor is ideal, especially since guests join in at the end, though level grass or beach sand works fine. Plug-in points nearby, and cover in case the weather turns. Costume changes need a green room with a mirror, a table and chairs, toilets close by, and some light refreshments. Cabling and equipment should be set where nobody can walk between them.
