About
Ayla Saul is a solo pianist and singer for hire in Longwarry, VIC.
Casual cabaret from the Gippsland region, written and performed at the piano. Ayla Saul's songs swing between funny and upbeat and something softer, and each one usually comes with a story told between numbers. Comparisons to Tim Minchin and Adele get made, which gives you the shape of it: sharp humour sitting next to real feeling. Nine originals in the set. It's music for a small room rather than a big stage, and it works best where people are close enough to listen. Ayla brings her own gear apart from speakers, and holds a Working With Children Check.
The show
The setlist moves. Some songs are funny and up, others drop right back to soft and slow, and Ayla reads the room to decide the order. Between numbers she'll talk, usually about where a particular song came from, sometimes just checking in with how everyone's going. That's the casual cabaret part, and it's the reason the songs land differently than they would from a background pianist. How much chat you get depends on the venue and the crowd in front of her.
On the day
Ayla brings her own gear, with one exception. Speakers need to come from you or the venue, so if there's an in-house PA, that covers it. Everything else on the music side is hers.
