Velvet Groove is a jazz duo for hire in Melbourne, VIC.
Ric Pegoli on piano with a vocalist alongside, playing jazz, blues and soul around Melbourne. The material draws on Etta James, Norah Jones, Eva Cassidy, Amy Winehouse, Natalie Cole, Randy Crawford, Frank Sinatra and a bit of Edith Piaf when a French accent suits the room. Drummers, guitarists and bass players can be added, so the duo becomes a trio or a full band depending on the event. They bring their own speakers, cables and mixer, and need a power outlet and about three metres square to work in. Requests are welcome in advance. MC services are available on request. Insured, with a certificate of currency provided if your venue wants one.
The show
Jazz, soul and timeless classics, pitched to whatever the night is. An elegant dinner, a corporate function and a private celebration all get a different reading of the same material. Communication ahead of the day is straightforward and the setup is quick. They arrive on time, dress for the occasion, and adjust the set list to the audience and the room. You can have them as background while people talk, or front and centre with the room facing them. And the duo isn't the only option, since a trio or full band can be arranged instead.
On the day
Speakers, cables and mixer come with them, so sound equipment isn't something you need to organise. What they ask for is a standard power outlet, a clear flat area of at least three metres by three, and parking or a loading zone close enough that gear doesn't have to be carried far. They're flexible on the details if your venue has quirks, so raise them early.
Performance options
Ric and his vocalist would rather build the night than sell you a set menu. The line up moves to suit the room: the duo can take on a drummer, a guitarist or a bass player and become a trio or a full band. MC work is on the table as well, so the people playing the music can also make the announcements and keep a reception ticking over. Raise it when you enquire and it gets planned in from the start.
