Flamenco dancer hire in Australia: the complete guide

7 flamenco dancers across Australia · free to enquire, no account needed

Flamenco makes noise with the feet. That is not a detail, it is the whole art form, and it is why this booking lives or dies on what the dancer is standing on. The footwork is percussion, played at speed by somebody who has trained for years to place it exactly, and a soft or hollow floor mutes half of what you are paying for.

Many of the listed performers are in Perth and Sydney, with others elsewhere. Check the dancer's base and whether they travel with musicians. What they charge is drawn live from their listings underneath this guide. The rest of this page is about the floor, the musicians and the small courtesies that let a trained dancer do the thing properly.

What a flamenco booking costs

The live range sits in the table below. The single biggest factor is how many people are on the bill. A solo dancer working to recorded accompaniment is one price. A dancer with a guitarist is another. Add a singer, a cajón player or a second dancer and you are booking a small company, and each of those is a professional musician being paid for the evening.

Set length matters less than people assume, because a flamenco piece is intense and short by design. Two or three numbers across an evening is a normal shape. What does move the price is travel, since the dancers are spread thinly across the country and many bookings involve somebody driving a long way or flying.

There are not enough listings in any one city to show a useful city price table yet. Check the profiles below for advertised starting prices, or enquire for a quote for your date and venue.

The floor is the instrument

Zapateado, the footwork, needs a hard, resonant, level surface. Timber over a cavity is ideal because it projects. Concrete works but is unforgiving on the dancer's joints. Carpet, thick vinyl, grass and sand kill the sound entirely. Many dancers travel with their own portable board for exactly this reason, and you should ask whether yours does, because it changes what your venue has to provide.

If a board comes, find out its size, how long it takes to lay and whether it needs to be down before guests arrive. It is heavy and it usually goes in through a service door. And if you are outdoors on a lawn, say so in your first message rather than hoping, because a board on soft ground needs a firm base under it and the dancer will want to see the spot.

The guitarist, the singer and the compás

Flamenco is built on compás, the rhythmic cycle that the dancer, the guitarist and the singer all hold together. It is largely improvised inside that structure, which means the performers are listening to each other and responding, not running a fixed routine. A dancer and guitarist who have worked together for years produce something a pickup pairing simply cannot.

So when you enquire, ask who else is coming and whether they perform together regularly. If your budget only stretches to a solo dancer with recorded music, that is a real and respectable booking. But ask the dancer which they would rather do at your event, because they will tell you honestly and it is often the better answer.

Sound, and the room around it

Two things need to be heard: the feet and the guitar. A flamenco guitar is quiet and does not survive a room of two hundred people talking, so ask whether the guitarist wants a microphone or a pickup and what the venue must supply. The feet often need a microphone on the floor as well, especially in a big space or outdoors.

Seat the audience if you can. Flamenco is close-up work and the detail is in the hands, the feet and the face, all of which are lost on people standing four rows back with a drink. A semicircle of chairs around a small performance area beats a stage at the far end of a function room almost every time.

Treating it as the art form it is

Flamenco carries the history of the Andalusian Roma communities that made it, and the people who perform it in Australia have usually spent years studying it, often in Spain. It is not a costume and it is not a novelty item for a Spanish-themed night. Book it as a performance and the difference shows in what turns up.

Practically, that means giving the performers what any serious act needs: a private space to change and warm up, somewhere to leave instruments safely, water, and a point in the evening when the talking stops and the room turns towards them. Ask about the palos too, the forms, because a soleá, an alegrías and a bulerías have very different moods and a good dancer will build the set around your event if you let them.

Questions worth asking before you book

What surface does the footwork need, and is a floor coming with you? Who is performing alongside you, and do you work together regularly? How many pieces do you perform and how long is the whole set? What sound reinforcement do you need for the guitar and the feet? And where do you need the audience sitting?

Ask for video of a live performance with the musicians rather than a studio clip. Flamenco filmed in a studio to a click track tells you almost nothing about what happens in a room. What you want to see is the dancer and the guitarist reading each other in front of an actual audience.

Booking tips

Ask about a portable floor early

It decides the load-in, the setup time and where in the room the act can go. Find out in the first email whether one is coming and how big it is.

Put chairs around them

This is close work. A seated semicircle at short range shows the hands and feet that a stage at the end of a long room hides.

Let the dancer pick the pieces

Tell them the occasion and the room, then leave the choice of forms to them. They know which ones land at a wedding and which suit a seated concert.
