For a town that runs as many weddings and food festivals as Mudgee does, the local list is one singer. After that card the page jumps to Orange and Bathurst, and that jump is close to ninety kilometres of Castlereagh Highway and range road, which is a real drive in the dark. Dubbo supplies more acts in reach than anywhere else, and Dubbo is further still.
That gap is the single most useful thing on this page, because it changes what you book and when. The cellar doors at Eurunderee and Gulgong fill their Saturdays from March to May and again in spring, and the acts driving in for them are pricing a late finish and a bed for the night.
Top picks are the nearby performers with the most visible reviews, then rating, then the closest; further afield the closest come first, and premium listings break remaining ties. Distances are straight-line from Mudgee. Ask each act whether they travel to your venue and what that costs.
Because the working musicians in this part of the state mostly live in Dubbo, Bathurst and Orange, and Mudgee's own performers are still joining the site one at a time. The distance on every card is the honest measure of who's actually near you. It will improve as more local acts list themselves.
The band's size does most of the work, and then the travel does the rest. A four-piece that has to drive in from the Central West, play three sets and stay the night is a different quote to the same band playing at home. Look at the from-prices beside each card as starting points and ask for travel and accommodation separately.
Autumn, roughly March into May, when the harvest events and the food and wine calendar run back to back, with a second rush in spring. Those weekends fill every room in town as well as every act. If you're planning for one of them, send enquiries as early as you have a date.
Power and shelter, mostly. A lot of Mudgee receptions happen under a marquee on a slope with the nearest outlet fifty metres away, and cold snaps arrive early out here once you're into May. Tell the act what the wet and cold plan is and they'll tell you what gear they can safely bring.
With one act in town and the rest an hour and a half out, a popular autumn Saturday can be gone across the whole page at once. Send the date to several at the same time. It's free to ask and nothing is booked until you accept a written quote.
An act finishing at midnight at a cellar door is not driving to Bathurst afterwards, so accommodation is part of the real cost whether it appears on the quote or not. Get it named as its own line, and check whether your venue has anything on site.
The local singer can cover the ceremony and the canapes without anyone driving anywhere, and then a DJ or a band from further out takes the reception. Two smaller bookings often cost less than one act stretched across eight hours.
