About
Romanian Folk Band is a folk band for hire in Canberra, ACT.
You will not hear this repertoire often in Australia, and that's most of the appeal. This Canberra group plays traditional Romanian party music, lautareasca and Romani folk in the Taraf de Haidouks tradition, led by veteran tambal (cimbalom) player Tim Meyen with violin, accordion and double bass alongside. The instrumentals are fast and the songs are old. They've played WOMADelaide, the National Folk Festival and Floriade among others, and the band has won awards for the work. The repertoire draws on Romica Puceanu, Gabi Lunca, Ion Onoriu, Victor Gore and Andrei Mihalache, and they'll take requests from anywhere in the genre. They bring a small PA or work with your operator.
Watch
The show
Traditional Romanian folk, played properly, and rarely heard anywhere in this country. That unfamiliarity is a good part of why it works on a crowd. The players are long experienced and well organised, they answer quickly and clearly when you are sorting out details, and they understand where the music sits in the shape of an event rather than treating the night as their own show.
On the day
The band carry a small PA and can put it up themselves ahead of the event. If your venue runs its own system with an operator, they will work in with them instead.
