Todd James got into electronic dance music on Sydney dance floors in the late 90s, starting with a crate of vinyl and a pair of turntables and learning to blend two records properly. That took him to venues in Bali, around the Shoalhaven, and to The Beach Hotel at Byron Bay. Fourteen years on, the job is mostly about reading a room and picking the next track on instinct rather than running a locked playlist. House parties, birthdays, school functions, corporate nights, weddings and bar gigs all sit in his history. Based at East Ballina on the far north coast of New South Wales.
The show
Todd works on instinct rather than a fixed playlist. He watches what the floor is doing and picks the next track off the back of it, which is why the same DJ set never happens twice. Fourteen years behind the decks sits underneath that, starting on vinyl in Sydney in the late nineties and taking in club rooms in Bali, gigs around the Shoalhaven and the Beach Hotel at Byron Bay. House parties, birthdays, school functions, corporate nights, weddings and bar gigs are all familiar ground, and the crowd in front of him decides where the night goes.
