Jokes, mainly. Alan handles the greeting, the arrival and the departure as part of the act, working the room on the way in and on the way out rather than only from behind the mic. On the day
A microphone and a speaker is what Alan would prefer, and honestly that's most rooms sorted. It doesn't have to be a proper stage rig. Anything that carries a voice to the back of the room without people straining will do the job. He'll work without one if the space is small and quiet enough for a voice to carry on its own, so a compact function room won't stop the set going ahead.
