About
Heywood's Heroes is a band for hire in Newcastle, NSW.
Three players, a compact patch of floor about 4m by 3m, and a sound built on roots rock with the volume up. Heywood's Heroes work out of Newcastle with vocals and electric guitar, bass and a drum kit, leaning on prog rock and 70s blues rock with Celtic and traditional threads running underneath. Most of what they play is their own: Outta Here, Fool's Gold, Fatal Shore, Rhythm of the Road. Then a handful of 60s and 70s covers turn up, Coming Into Los Angeles and Country Honk among them, plus Willin' and She Caught the Katie. The style shifts across roots, electric blues, a bit of country and folk rock. They carry public liability cover is in place.
Watch
The show
Roots rock with an edge on it, mostly Heywood's Heroes' own songs, with a handful of 60s and 70s covers folded in so there's something familiar to hang onto. The sound moves around inside that: electric blues on some numbers, a bit of country and folk rock on others. Vocals sit right out front and the guitar work builds the layers underneath. It's music with a bit of grit in it rather than something polished smooth.
On the day
Three players fit into about four metres by three. That covers vocals and electric guitar, bass and a full drum kit, so it's a real band footprint rather than an acoustic corner, but it's still small enough for a function room or a decent-sized backyard. Measure the spot you have in mind before you enquire. If it's tight, better to know now than on the day.
